The Living Key

Dawn hasn't existed for very long, but most people think she has. She is, to most of the world, a fourteen-year-old girl who has just moved to Beacon Hills with her mother Joyce, and many of those who know the Summers family remember her. She was, to their memory, there when Buffy Summers, her sister, found out she was a vampire slayer. She was there through the family's adventures in Sunnydale. She was there when the Slayers were awoken, and she was one of them.

Except, she wasn't.

OOC: The magic that affected everybody's memory was not entirely successful on some people. Perhaps they remember them, but know something isn't right, or some might not be affected at all and know that she seemed to just pop into existance recently.

Personality[]

Dawn is a kid sister who is tired of being called a kid. She's always eager to be useful, to help out and to show that she's capable of being special too. She loves school, often happy just to learn but also for the social aspects. She really doesn't like seeing her friends and family insulted, and she'll quickly come to their defence. She'll rarely back down when she believes she's right, often leading to arguments with her sister.

SKILLS[]

ACADEMICS

"Novice"

Dawn was made in the image of a soon-to-be freshman high school student. She's intelligent and loves school, so she's actually somewhat ahead of her class in most subjects.

COMBAT

"Novice"

According to her false memories, Dawn was one of the Slayers whose power was awakened during the final battle for Sunnydale. So, in those memories, she's been training with the others under Buffy's tutelage ever since. She still has a lot to learn, but she knows enough to handle herself in an emergency.

COMPUTERS

"Competent"

Dawn was made in the image of an intelligent, modern teenager. So, of course, she is skilled with computers. She knows just about everything on the user's point of view, and she even knows some tricks for programming or hacking. Of course, she's still far from an expert.

LORE

"Novice"

After spending years (at least in her false memories) watching her sister fight demons, and doing her best to help out, Dawn has picked up a number of tidbits of knowledge about supernatural. She doesn't know a lot, but she knows more than most humans.

RESEARCH

"Competent"

In the false memories created for her, Dawn was most often able to help by simply helping Willow and Xander and others with research. So, the monks that formed her gave her excellent skill in researching topics, at finding the information she wants.

POWERS[]

AGILITY

"Enhanced"

Using the power of the Key to replicate the power of a Slayer, Dawn's agility is far superior to a normal human's, allowing her to catch arrows with moderate effort and dodge bullets with a bit of luck. In addition, her running speed and reflexes are ten to twenty times human norms.

SENSES

"Enhanced"

Replicating the power of a Slayer, Dawn has enhanced senses, though not to the level of many other supernatural creatures. They are still enough that she can, if she knows to try, can get a good sense of her surroundings even while unable to see, or to see the details during combat that others might miss. She is unable, however, to sense vampires and demons like a proper Slayer would.

STRENGTH

"Enhanced"

Using the power of the Key to replicate Slayer strength, Dawn is strong enough to crush or bend metal, even dead-lifting up to a few tons with an effort. Her punches are hard enough to crack stone.

THE KEY

"Supernatural"

Dawn is, in actuality, a mystical construct known as The Key. A swirl of magical energy, the Key is capable, with the right rituals, of tearing down the walls of reality itself, opening rifts between dimensions that make Hellmouths looked downright tame in comparison. This is not a power that Dawn controls, she doesn't even know she is the key. This is something that others can use her for, not something that Dawn can do of her own free will even when she finds out.

TOUGHNESS

"Enhanced"

Replicating the power of a Slayer, Dawn is incredibly tough, able to sustain severe beatings without even bruising. She also heals faster than normal, though slightly slower than a proper Slayer, able to recover from even severe injuries much faster than a normal human would.

ADVANTAGES[]

BUFFY[]

Dawn has one of the biggest advantages there is. Her big sister is The Slayer. There may be many Slayers now, but her sister is the most powerful and experienced of them all. Of course, they argue, and fight, as all sisters do, but when Dawn needs her, she knows she can rely on her sister.

COMBAT INSTINCT[]

Slayers are gifted with formidable fighting abilities. Even before the potential slayer is activated, they have a natural ability to defend themselves, which seems to be triggered by supernatural threats. This ability further allows slayers to learn combat skills and tactics at an astounding rate, learning in days or weeks what would take the average human years or decades to master.

MOM[]

Joyce Summers is a loving mother, protective and sometimes stern, but is always there when Dawn needs emotional support, or sometimes a lecture to set her straight.

WEAKNESSES[]

PSEUDO-SLAYER[]

The monks who shaped the Key into Dawn did their best to replicate a Slayer. However, they couldn't quite do it. She has all the physical capabilities, if perhaps fractionally weaker, but they couldn't replicate the mystical side. She doesn't have the Slayer dreams, she cannot sense vampires and demons, and magic that is based on the Slayer gift (like the Scythe) doesn't work for her.

THE KEY[]

Being the Key, Dawn is a target of any demon or monster that wants to bring one of their varieties of hell to earth. Only secrecy keeps her safe, and the fact that most can't see what she is. Only those who can see the world as it really is, like angels, the insane, and small children can see that Dawn is not a proper person. In fact, looking at her they see someone that shouldn't exist at all.

Long ago, perhaps when the walls of reality were erected, a Key was made. This Key could, temporarily, bring these walls down allowing the mingling of dimensions and free passage between them.

In the twelfth century, a group of monks found this Key and devoted themselves to protecting it. Over the years, they learned to control the Key, using its power to do good, tiny bits at a time.

Recently, the order of monks began to fail. Word of the Key escaped, and those who wished to use it unwisely were drawn to it. Others wished to destroy it, as well, to keep those who wish to use it from destroying humanity.

Knowing they couldn't protect it much longer, they found someone who could. A Slayer named Buffy Summers. Watching her, they saw that there were two things she seemed to protect above all: her family, and the Slayers she trained.

Shaping the Key using its own power, they turned it into such a real human girl they gave it a soul. Reality was altered, giving everybody false memories of her existence all long, as Buffy's sister and one of the newly activated Slayers. Except, they couldn't quite get the latter right, leaving the girl not quite as capable as real Slayers.

Dawn, as she is named, may have just popped into reality. However, she remembers being a Summers all along, and being part of many events over recent years. Most other people remember this too, though not everybody. Some, small children and the insane and beings like angels and fairies, see that she isn't even supposed to exist. Others, those the spell couldn't affect entirely, can sense that something isn't right with memories of her. Rarer still, some, though they see Dawn as anybody else does, remember that she didn't exist until recently. To her, this is her reality. She has no idea none of it is real.
