The Righteous Darkness
"How dreadful knowledge of the truth can be when there's no help in truth!"
LJ is something of a traveling substitute teacher, archivist, and librarian, taking jobs in whatever of those forms he can manage. He's a serious and intense sort of man, not unfriendly, but not prone to bursts of extroversion or humor either, (though he isn't without humor). He enjoys his books, is an occult encyclopedia, and largely keeps to himself, which tends to lend him an aura of quiet mystery.
Lawrence Jasper "LJ" Knight is a man haunted by duality. He is both a scholar and a warrior, a creature of valor, but a liar, a creature of justice, but a thief. He is cultured and eloquent, but also at times savage and terrible. In a bright room, he is that discolored stain, but in an otherwise dark sky, he is that single point of light. He is a man who becomes whatever he must for the greatest good, however terrible, but quietly hopes he doesn't have to.
LJ doesn't consider himself a hero, or even a good guy for that matter, because he understands the dark things of the world even as he does his best to remove them from it. Maybe one day it'll be his turn. Maybe that's just the way these things work. But he isn't one to dwell, and instead focuses on what he can do now, while he has the time.
And so though LJ can seem very intense, driven, and even cold, he is in truth a man of substantial empathy, selflessness, and if not honesty--for his job requires deceit, then at least genuine beneficence. He does not make friends easily, but is loyal to those who can reach and tolerate him, because he is often blunt, forthright, and non-nonsense. Except when he can't afford to be.
While he doesn't have a degree proper, LJ is extraordinarily well-educated in subjects related to artifacts and ancient texts (history, archaeology, whatever). This includes reading dead/old languages pertinent to esoterica.
LJ possesses a feline grace that affords him the ability to get places he really ought not to be. This has been achieved largely through a decade of training (being a thief). This includes things like parkour, stealth.
As a street fighter and underworld thug, LJ learned many means of defending himself, and he's quite adept at using his fists as well as firearms and some melee weapons.
He's been a wheelman. He's good enough at it to lose a tail.
The man had a witch as a teacher who would, for years, not let him leave the house (quite literally) until he had mastered every pertinent bit of information she could think of. Specifically, she educated him on the darker magics and mystical items, the really evil/forbidden/forgotton stuff (hence, esoteric), though his education also included occult lore in a more wholistic sense, lest he confuse GREAT EVIL with shiny magic bauble.
Call it a mastery of small manners, memorable style, or a well-cultured upbringing, but LJ knows how to schmooze, charm, beguile, and otherwise whamboozle to get whatever or wherever he needs.
With superb, almost preternatural powers of observation, LJ has a honed talent for finding what has been intentionally hidden, be it in the wild or in a fabulous manor, particular when it comes to mystical items.
He's had to lie and misdirect a lot. He's exceedingly, frustratingly good at secrecy, mystery, and being fantastically obtuse--like a bad (good) fortune cookie.
Breaking and entering is easy peasy. Unless we're talking corporate-level security or high-end computer hacking, LJ can probably find a way to get in and take what he needs.
On his own, LJ has had enough practice with meditation and a variety of other methods and tools to summon inner strength enough to prevent himself from doing inappropriate things. (Like fondling dark artifacts for SCIENCE!)
LJ is fast. Almost impossibly fast. This level of feline grace and reflex is a step beyond that of werewolves and similar shifters and approaches the level of dodging bullets, climbing and bounding with gymnastic ease almost anywhere, and fading into darkness as if he were an actual shadow. This is lessened slightly when in human form.
ARCANE TATTOOS Edit
These allow LJ to temporarily cloak (but not remove) his supernatural essence, allowing him to bypass things like Mountain Ash, or hide from Divination/scrying effects. The tattoos manage this by actually draining LJ of his shifter mojo (and thus dulling all of those abilities down to normal levels) to power themselves, however, so he is essentially a slightly witchy mortal for the period(s) of time that he is hidden. (But not actually, since silver still sucks.)
DARK FATE Edit
LJ just tends to find himself in places where a dark presence or item is at work, and gets visions or dreams that obtusely inform him of its location, purpose, or intent. Generally speaking, he has a sixth sense with regards to detecting darkness and evil. Sense Evil!
A necessary detecting skill for tracking the movements of dark energies and the like, however LJ largely specializes in tracking items and reading people, surfing the spiritual airwaves for dire portents is a bit out of his purview. The precise foci really depends on the intended use in this case, though he does wear glasses for a reason...
Here, LJ focuses on defying and seeing through illusions, as well as conjuring up glamours and disguises for purposes of complementing his thieving skills, evading pursuit and so on. Usually, these are in the form of spells or incantations.
This was taught to LJ largely for puposes of self-shielding, warding, and Jedi mind tricks--infiltration by any means. Typically, incantation and specific phrasing woven into conversation works here.
Like most shifters, LJ is possessed of a of an enhanced ability to heal himself at an alarming rate.
Even without being in a beast form, LJ's senses are potent and sharp, to the point where strong scents, smells, and sounds can be incredibly distracting or painful. When in a beast form, LJ can even suss out mystical and magical auras, and his sensory power takes another leap forward.
While similar to werewolf shifting, the Panther mutation of the werewolf strain comes with its own set of quirks (namely greater power at the expense of self-will). With little difficulty, LJ can shift to a near-man and normal panther form at will. The touch of Darkness on these forms is greater than on his human form, however, and so his Pull weakness comes into its fullest effect. To utilize his other two forms (the man-beast and smilodon), LJ must fully descend into the darker aspects of his nature--the lust for power (man-beast) or the surrender to instinct (smilodon). When in either of these powerful forms, LJ becomes an engine of fear or destruction (respectively), consumed by that form's base nature. Shifting out of these forms is extraordinarily difficult without external aid, as at that point, LJ has essentially drunk of the Kool-Aid and will not want to shift back.
In human form, LJ's senses are exceedingly sensitive (Enhanced); they only get more fine-tuned in his shifted forms (Supernatural). In his human form, LJ is also very fast and agile (Enhanced), but likewise, he is at his most graceful in his shifted forms (Supernatural). Human LJ has robust human strength and durability (Basic), but it is still human. In his shifted forms, these improve to Enhanced. His Enhanced ability to regenerate is present in all forms. When in his Man-beast form, LJ exudes an aura of fear and terror; when in his Smilodon form, he exudes an aura of rage and savagery. Both of these forms sport supernaturally-empowered claws that leave freezing wounds of silver ice, weep a noxious, smoky darkness, and do not heal without supernatural aid of some kind. Leaving them untreated will ultimately induce a state of lunacy matching the form LJ was in at the time.
Like most shifters, LJ is possessed of an enhanced strength far beyond that of humanity.
To counterbalance his miraculous agility, a certain amount of endurance is required to sustain that level of energy output, and so LJ is a particularly hardy sort regardless of form (but within reason for that form).
LADY GREY Edit
A powerful (very British) witch based out of Edinburgh, Scotland, she prefers LJ to work on his own, but is available to him for some supernatural assistance so long as his request is related to the Mission (find and store Bad Things); she simply ignores anything else. Examples: She is willing to help LJ work out particularly hard mystical puzzles or provide a snip of occult information (as a phone a friend, sort of deal); she is willing to offer the occasional rare material (like dragon's blood or whatever); and if she Absolutely Must, she Might provide her own magics (namely Divination, Healing, Trans/Warding). She does not involve herself in violence or manipulation--ever. The incorruptible woman sees herself as a mentor, an adviser, not a backpocket cannon, and she adamantly refuses to be reduced to such.
LIGHT IN THE DARK Edit
This is the spark that keeps LJ going--it's his passion for goodness, for justice, and his empathy for those undeserving of the terrible. While he's not a bleeding heart, this is his refrain to constantly do good, and bolsters him when his willpower might otherwise fail, when he feels the urge to fall to darkness, or when the pain of something might otherwise be too great. This is his Pandora's Hope.
MYSTICAL INFORMATION NETWORK Edit
Something of a burgeoning mystical spymaster, for years now, LJ has tended to a growing collection of favors, debts, and contacts through which he can locate magical artifacts or glean information of a supernatural caliber. Sometimes he has to perform favors in return, but the man can normally tease out the information he needs, provided there's information to be found.
The remnants of LJ's thieving days exists largely in the form of a still healthy bank account, a pickup truck, a pistol, and a furnished apartment.
THE ARCHIVE Edit
When LJ has the chance, he sends particularly dangerous items for storage in Lady Grey's more secure compound. Barring that, he has his own safehouse he calls "The Archive" not far from Beacon Hills where he stores all of his collected magical stuff, knowledge, and esoterica. Think of them like a pantry or spice rack of magical utility; no individual item is particularly powerful, they are mostly just useful together as a library, spell components and foci, that sort of thing.
Even in his human form, LJ's senses are incredibly sharp, moreso than that of werewolves. It sometimes gets to the point where strong scents, smells, and sounds can be incredibly distracting or painful, but they can usually be mitigated by dulling the senses with earplugs, cigarette smoke, sunglasses, etc.
NO MATTER THE COST Edit
LJ has a mission to find those things that Should Not Be and put them to rest forever. This includes evil living things as well. Whatever the cost, including going full-on vigilante assassin if necessary, LJ will do whatever he must to ensure that the threat is extinguished.
NO MOON Edit
Unlike werewolves, darkness is a natural state for the panther, so Lunar eclipses do not cause their powers to wane. However, the longer LJ exists without the guiding light of the moon, the stronger his inherent darkness grows, and it becomes more likely he will do increasingly terrible things with still the very best of intentions.
PULL OF DARKNESS Edit
Simply the downside to being a panther is the constant creep of a downward spiral and the unconcious desire to become one with darkness. In a mundane sense, this manifests as LJ's tendancy to want to fade into the shadows both literally and figuratively. He typically tries to avoid limelight in general. Supernaturally, this is the song of fell powers, which makes it easier for LJ to find said powers, but also makes it more difficult for him to resist them (be they a person, mystical item, whatever).
Rowan and Mountain Ash affect LJ in the same was as it would any other supernatural creature.
Silver harms LJ in much the same manner as it harms werewolves.
